Forklift Mechanic – Possible

Future Career Option?

In addition to becoming a forklift operator, future opportunities can

also open up to people who also train to become forklift

mechanics/technicians. It is not uncommon for certified mechanics

to make as much as $35hr and they are in demand across North America. In many cases, lift truck technicians started their careers working as forklift operators, then worked towards tradesman certification.

Tasks that forklift mechanics/technicians perform on the job include:

     • Practical knowledge and training of safety standards/performing safety inspections.

     • Diagnosing, troubleshooting, and the servicing and repair of forklift equipment.

     • Knowledge of engines, ignition systems, batteries and electric motors, clutch systems and

     suspension components.

     • Training and knowledge in various fuel/power systems including diesel, natural gas and

     rechargeable battery systems.

     • Troubleshooting and repair of power steering components and hydraulic brakes.

     • The troubleshooting and repair of lifting systems and hydraulics.

     • Performing final inspections & oversee work orders.

     • Create cost estimates and communicate with customers or service managers the time and cost

     repairs require.

     • Stay up to date with the latest service manuals and bulletins on forklift equipment.

There are several colleges across North America that offer trades apprenticeship programs for lift

truck technicians. Often they require you to complete many hours of on-the-job training as well as written examinations to receive you certificate. The benefit of this training is you are being paid while you learn.

If you have an interest in repairing vehicles, or a general knowledge of mechanical fundamentals,

you may find a rewarding career in becoming a forklift technician.
