Forklift History #1: The Towmotor Toy
What you see here is not actually a toy forklift – rather it is a salesman’s teaching sample that would be used to sell companies on the Towmotor forklift as well as teach employees how to operate the machine during classes. This was also useful to teach future operators how to use the machine while
it was on order from the factory. This piece dates from the 1950s and was made in the USA.
Notice that the model uses a
standard household outlet for power.
Not for kids!
A detailed look at the controls as well as the lifting mechanism, which is similar to the real machine.
This machine has four operational levers, similar to forklifts of today. Notice that the “Crosby Research Foundation” is one of the companies owned by Bing Crosby himself. It seems they were hired to create this teaching model.
Front forks are adjustable, like the real thing.
Looking underneath, you can see how complex this “toy” really is. Not many of these models exist today!
